General Information

Description - The Billy the Kid Trail received a Scenic Historic Byway designation from the Federal Highway Commission in June of 1995. In June of 1998, the designation was upgraded to a National Scenic Byways.

The Lincoln County area is rich in history. It has been home to Billy the Kid, the Lincoln County War, the Mescalero Apache tribe, Kit Carson, "Black Jack" Pershing, the Buffalo Soldiers, the world's richest Quarter Horse race, and Smokey the Bear.

The Billy the Kid Trail travels through a region marked by exceptional natural scenic beauty and diversity. From grassy plains to dense pine forests, the region is known for its stunning views and cool mountain climate. Visually, it is breathtakingly different from the arid desert that surrounds it. The area is rich in historical and cultural tradition, as well as recreational opportunities.

Attractions - The Billy the Kid Trail is known for it's Archeology, Cultural, Historical, Natural, Recreational and Scenic Attractions.

Directions from : There are several ways to travel this byway. For example, you can begin the loop in Ruidoso and follow U.S. 70 to Hondo. From Hondo, take U.S. 380 to Capitan. In Capitan, get onto NM 48 and follow it back to Ruidoso.

The most direct way to access the Trail from each direction:

  • North: Take Hwy 54 to Carrizozo, then take Hwy 380 to Capitan.

  • South: Take Hwy 54 from Alamogordo to Hwy 70 to Ruidoso.

  • East: Take Hwy 380 from Roswell to Capitan.

  • West: Take Hwy 380 from San Antonia to Capitan.
