General Information

Description - Adjacent to Diablo Foothills is Castle Rock Park, at the end of Castle Rock Road in a scenic canyon dominated by prominent sandstone formations.

Besides Diablo Foothills, Castle Rock Park is bordered by Mt. Diablo State Park and Walnut Creek Open Space, providing access to more than 18,000 acres of public lands.

Attractions - Castle Rock Park has long been a reservable park for large group picnics, and the Park District is continuing the pleasant traditions of this formerly private operation. Reservations are required for admission.

Attractions at Castle Rock include a swimming pool, facepainting, a playground, volleyball courts, and a softball field. Castle Rock has seven reservable picnic areas, which can accommodate groups from 10 to 3,000 people. Groups may rent one site or reserve the entire park, and catering service is available. Castle Rock is closed during the winter.

Group horseback rides are available from a private stable near the park entrance. See Contact Information for phone number.

Recreation - Castle Rock provides a destination for group picnicking, swimming, games and play, and nearby horseback riding.

Climate - Climate in the San Francisco Bay area varies greatly with elevation and the amount of coastal influence. Areas with more coastal influence experience moderate temperatures year round with fog likely from June through mid-August. Plan your coastal visit in the late summer or fall to ensure the best conditions for viewing the scenery. Also, occasional clear days between winter and spring storms are incomparable. Areas further inland experience greater temperature extremes, with relatively cooler winters and hot summers. Inland areas often receive frost on winter nights. As throughout most of California most of the precipitation comes in the winter months, with April through October normally very dry.

Location - Castle Rock Park is located East of Walnut Creek at the end of Castle Rock Road, adjacent to Diablo Foothills.
