Description
- Historic Durango is home base for the San Juan National Forest Administration and the home of Fort Lewis College, a four-year liberal arts institution. The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is one of the city's most popular attractions, drawing hundreds of thousands of sightseers and fun seekers every year. Mesa Verde National Park is within easy driving range and a drive on the San Juan Skyway provides a scenic tour of the region. Purgatory Ski Resort, the Animas River and the surrounding national forest makes Durango a good place to begin an outdoor adventure in any season.
Recreation - Sight seeing, scenic driving, rock climbing, hiking, mountain and road biking, camping, kayaking and rafting opportunities abound in the Durango area during warm weather. Telemark and alpine skiing, snowboarding, backcountry skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling have become popular winter recreation pursuits in the area. Durango is in Southwest Colorado, about 40 miles from Mesa Verde National Park. Durango can be reached from Montrose, Ouray and Silverton via U.S. 550. U.S. 160 goes east to west through Durango giving easy access to Cortez and Pagosa Springs.
