Scenic entrance greets visitors to hidden Holliday Lake State Park

Description - The scenic park with a 150-acre lake is one of the more quiet parks in Virginia. Gentle rolling hills, deciduous trees and lovely summer flower gardens frame the peaceful lake.

Attractions - This quiet getaway park lies within the boundaries of the Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest. Its lake is crystal clear and offers a healthy population of bass, northern pike, crappie, bluegill and channel catfish. A small visitor center displays the park's history and Robert E. Lee's final retreat of the Confederates. There are 30 campsites, mostly tent but a few accommodate RVs. Seasonally, the park rents paddleboats, rowboats, canoes and picnic shelters. A small boat launch is available, however, the lake allows only electric motors. Also available is a peaceful swimming beach with bathhouse. A centrally located concession carries a variety of items from sandwiches to camping necessities. The park has hiking trails that are also available to mountain bikers and equestrians.

Recreation - Visitors enjoy camping, fishing, paddleboating, hiking, swimming, wildlife viewing, picnicking and just relaxing at this very quiet tucked-away park. History buffs can enjoy the Appomattox National Historical Park that is approximately 12 miles away.

Climate - Virginia generally has mild winters and warm humid summers. The eastern portion of the state has winter temperatures averaging above 36 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius). The state's summer temperatures have little variation. The eastern portion of Virginia generally experiences temperatures above 78 degrees Fahrenheit (26 Celsius). High humidity along with warm temperatures can be uncomfortable.

Location - From Appomattox to 4.5 miles north on Rt. 24. Turn right on Rt. 626 and travel 2 miles to Rt. 640. Turn left onto 640 and at .2 mile, turn right onto Rt. 692. Park entrance is about 1.5 miles.

Report: This is one of Virginia's best equestrian parks. You could train for an endurance ride here. The hills are great. We had a blast.
