Description - Katahdin Iron Works is the site of a once thriving iron works built in 1843. A restored blast furnace and charcoal kiln remind visitors of an effort that produced nearly 2,000 tons of raw iron annually for half a century. Charcoal was made in fourteen kilns consuming 10,000 cords of wood a year. Viewing the historical furnace and kiln is offered each year during the summer months. This site offers access to the Appalachian Trail. Picnicking is available.

Recreation - This seasonal attraction may be viewed each summer between Memorial Day and Labor Day. In addition to viewing the historical workings of an old furnace and kiln, picnicking is permitted. Access to the Appalachian Trail is via an old logging road heading west out of the site. Climate - Katahdin / Moosehead / Penquis Region has daytime winter temperatures in the northern area averaging 10 - 14 degrees Fahrenheit (-12 to -10 Celsius). In the southern area, winter temperatures average 14 - 18 degrees Fahrenheit (-10 to -8 Celsius). Summer brings cool, pleasant breezes with temperatures in the northern area averaging 66 degrees Fahrenheit (19 Celsius) and in the southern area averaging around 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 Celsius). To reach the Katahdin Iron Works from SR 11 in the Katahdin Region, travel five miles north of Brownville Junction, then take gravel road 6 miles to "K.l."
