Mueller State Park
Description - Mueller State Park encompasses 12,103 acres on the western slope of Pikes Peak. The park is split into two areas. Wapiti Road is the main thoroughfare through the park for vehicles. It is located in the northern end of the park and provides access to picnic areas, camp grounds, the visitor center and trails. The northern end of the park includes 41 individual picnic sites and 130 campsites. These are modern facilities with electricity, water, tables, grills, toilets, showers and a dump station.

Mueller State Park maintains 85 miles of trails that access all areas of the park. The southern part of the park is referred to as the Dome Rock or Four mile day use area. It is considerably less developed than the north. This region of the park is a state-run wildlife area. It is closed from December 15 to May 15 for bighorn sheep grazing and lambing.

Recreation - The developed areas of Mueller State Park make it a great place to enjoy camping, picnicking, viewing scenery, photography, biking, fishing, hiking and horseback riding. Mueller is open year-round. During the winter months the trails are excellent for cross-country skiing.

Climate - The elevation of this park is approximately 9,000 feet. Because it lies between mountain ranges dramatic weather changes may occur in any one day. If you visit Mueller during the winter months be prepared for temperatures in the 30s and bright sunshine. (Bring your sunscreen.) Winter temperatures in the shade or during a snow storms can drop quickly. Always be prepared for precipitation no matter what the season.

Summers are usually mild with high temperatures reaching into the 80s. Nights can be chilly with frost in July. Wearing layers is a good way to prepare for all types of weather. An outer waterproof layer is a necessity for summer activities.

Location - This state facility is easy to reach from the Front Range. It is approximately 30 miles west of Colorado Springs on Highway 24. The park lies on the western slope of Pikes Peak.

Report: I would agree that this park is a great place to hike and camp. During our time there, it snowed several inches, adding to the already beautiful scenery. Wildlife was plentiful. The ranger said they even found some Lynx tracks, an animal that, as I understand it, is rarely seen that far south. I definetly plan to camp there again, and hike some more of the trails.

Report: This is our absolutely favorite place to camp in Colorado. It is quiet and peaceful, with very spacious campsites. The restroom/shower/laundry are just really perfect. It is well off the road and patrolled frequently by the rangers....very secure feeling. Hiking trails are well marked and give you opportunity to see gorgeous views of the mountains. The entire campground is in a mountainous/forest region with lots of shade. Campsites are level. Paved roads add to the appeal.
