General Information

Description - Lake Thunderbird State Park is so close to the city but so far away from the hustle and bustle. Camp at Lake Thunderbird State Park and enjoy the fishing, boating, hiking, and biking. Head for nearby Norman for all the excitment of this busy college town.

This state park offers a variety of water activities and recreation, hunting in specified areas during season, horse rental and boarding (Thunderbird Riding Stables, 405-321-5768), horseback riding trails, hiking, mountain biking, nature and interpretive trails, restaurant (in season), two marinas (Calypso Cove, 405-360-9846 and Little River, 405-364-8335), nature center with interpretive programs and scheduled events, and an archery range. Accommodations include RV camping, primitive campsites and unfurnished one-room lake huts. Playgrounds, picnic tables and a swimming beach are also on site. Indian gaming casino located nearby. A fee of $3 per vehicle per day applies to day-use visitors at the Little Axe area. (fee is waived if camping in this area).

Climate - This state has a mild climate due to its southern location and low elevations. The western regions of the state are somewhat drier than that of the east. Winter temperatures range from 50 degrees to 25 degrees F. The season extends from December through February and very little snow fall during this period. Spring begins in March, with temperatures between 50 and 70 degrees F. Temperatures rise throughout the season and summer highs begin to peak in July and August. All regions of Oklahoma receive days with temperatures reaching 100 degrees. The southwestern corner of the state usually records the hottest temperatures. by October fall temperatures provide relief from the heat of summer. Temperatures during this season reach into the 60s for highs and dip into the 30s for the lows. The relative humidity has an annual average of 64 percent. The most rainfall occurs during the months of May and June.

Location - 13 miles E of Norman on Alameda Dr, or 15 miles E of I-35 on Hwy 9.
