Outdoor recreation abounds in the Central East Travel Region. Wildlife and bird-watching opportunities abound at locations such as The Manatee Observation and Education Center in Fort Pierce, St. Lucie Inlet State Preserve, Sebastian Inlet State Recreation Area, and Canaveral National Seashore. Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge offers The Blackpoint Wildlife Drive, which is a fabulous nature lovers drive offering a six mile loop road where visitors have found it so enjoyable that six miles of traveling consumes two hours of time. Beachcombing is a favorite, along with surfing, surf fishing, deep-sea fishing, warmwater fishing, ocean swimming and shoreline camping. Viewing historical ruins at Bulow Plantation and Hontoon Island State Park and popular destinations as well as visits to NASA's Kennedy Space Center. Tourists will find canoe trails at De Leon Springs State Recreation Area, public gardens at McKee Botanical Gardens, over 100 miles of hiking trail on the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail, and much more.
