It's a beautiful half-hour bike ride (or longer hike) from the highway up to this campground. There's a slight incline for the entire way, but only slight. It's probably a gain of no more than a few hundred feet elevation in the entire 6 to 7 miles. The road is paved and follows along the West Fork of the San Gabriel River the whole way. As you get past mile 3, you see no one at all but a few workers from the dam further up the road, and once you get to the campsite, it's well worth it. The spot's located under a beautiful grove of trees right next to the river. It's well maintained and clean, peaceful, and spacious.
