Not much in the way of 'dells' aka:shade as far as we went. Mostly uphill the first mile and views were nice, but not spectacular. Would suggest a start time of more like 6-8A.M. so as to avoid the heat and the gnats. Reports of a rattlesnake from a climber coming up as we were going down, but we didn't hear or see anything ourselves. I think the trail would be very nice during winter or spring as there is a creek bed along alot of the way (dry now) and there is a fair bit of uphill (not horrible, just monotonous). The fire crew was coming up as we were going down and they said another 1/2 mile and there were some oaks and more views so I think it is worth doing the whole route. Also, they said you can hook up with Shelf Road so might want to park a car there and then come back in another one to this trail head and spend the day hiking. Just not during the heat as there isn't much shade. Came back down and went to Deer Lodge for a really nice smokey med-rare buffalo burger. They had a good looking BBQ lunch going on for Sundays.
