A pleasant day hike which offers spectacular views along the way. An excellent area for picnics and mountain scenery exists at the trail's end.
Sheep Creek Trail Conejos Peak Ranger District,

The Sheep Creek drainage has several unique features which make Trail #735 attractive to day hikers. It shows two examples of ecological succession, one following fire and one following an insect infestation.
Silver Mountain Trail Conejos Peak Ranger District,

The Spectacle Lake trail provides an ideal day hike for those camping at the Spectacle Lake and Conejos Campgrounds.

The trailhead starts from the parking area at the end of Forest Development Road # 247.
Timber Lake Trail Conejos Peak Ranger District,

Timber Lake lies on the plateau between Canon Rincon and Hansen Creek. From the Timber Lake Trail one is afforded striking views into the depths of Canon Rincon.
Tobacco Lake Trail (#715) Conejos Peak Ranger District,

At one time the trail went to Tobacco Lake, but a portion of the trail was destroyed during timber sale operations in the area. The trail follows Lake Fork Creek, and the visitor will pass a series of pleasant cascades.

The Tobacco Lake Trail is one route that visitors can follow to climb Conejos Peak.

This is a lightly used trail. Water is not available along this trail.
Valle Victoria Trail Conejos Peak Ranger District,

The Valle Victoria Trail provides access to the high country between Elk Creek and the South Fork of the Conejos River. This area is characterized by numerous lakes and interspersed subalpine meadows and forests.
West Chama Trail Conejos Peak Ranger District,

The West Chama Trail provides access to upper Chama Basin, an area of virgin spruce-fir forests surrounding steep and colorful volcanic cliffs. Waterfalls tumbling over the cliffs can be seen from almost any vantage point.
Zapata Falls Area Conejos Peak Ranger District,

This hike is not for everyone. Be prepared to climb a short ladder, get your feet wet in cold water and balance on slippery rocks.
Zapata Trail Conejos Peak Ranger District,
Rio Grande National Forest
The trailhead for Zapata is about 3/4 mile inside the forest boundary and it can be used to access California Peak. From the ridgetop where the trail ends one can see vistas of the Huerfano and San Luis Valleys.
