The first half of the trail is fairly easy, if not a rather monotonous grind at times. The last half becomes quite steep and rocky. The upper trail is difficult and can be dangerous if care is not given.
St. Charles Peak can be climbed from three different starting points. Two are easily accessible from Lake Isabel, the other comes from Greenhorn Mountain Road.
Trinchera Peak is located above Cuchara and this four-wheel drive road gets you a few miles closer to the summit. Travel through conifers to tree line, where all but high clearance 4 WD vehicles.
